About This Reference

Opcio Data is an independent editorial resource about electrical engineering, computer science and informatics. It publishes explanatory writing on ten established subfields, aimed at readers who want a clear account of how something works rather than a citation-dense treatment or a product brochure.

What This Site Is Not

Being precise about this matters more than it usually would, so it is stated plainly and near the top:

  • This is not a conference, symposium or event. The site does not organise, host or promote any event, and has no association with any conference that may have used a similar name.
  • This is not a journal or a publisher. It does not accept paper submissions, does not operate peer review, and does not publish proceedings.
  • There are no fees of any kind. Nothing here is charged for, and the site never asks a reader or an author for money, registration or membership.
  • There is no directory of people. The site does not maintain a committee, an editorial board, a speaker roster or an author index, and does not publish claims about named individuals.

If you have arrived looking for a call for papers, a submission portal or a registration desk, this is not that site and never has been.

Editorial Rules

The reference holds itself to a short set of rules, chosen because they are the ones that are easy to quietly break.

Anchor claims to primary sources

Where a page states a standard, a physical quantity or a measured figure, it links to the body that defines or publishes it, not to another explainer repeating it. Second-hand numbers drift; a link to the source lets a reader check rather than trust.

Prefer the honest gap to the confident guess

Engineering writing is full of places where the truthful answer is "it depends on the installation" or "the published figures disagree". Those are stated as such. A page that smooths over genuine uncertainty is more comfortable to read and less useful to rely on.

Define before using

Every page is written so a capable reader outside the specialism can follow it end to end. Jargon is introduced with its definition attached, or not used. This is the rule most often violated across technical writing generally, usually by authors who have forgotten what they once did not know.

No promotional content

The site does not review, rank or recommend commercial products, and does not accept payment for coverage. Where a specific technology is named, it is because naming it is the clearest way to make a general point.

On Sources and Credibility

A recurring theme across these pages is that the credibility of a technical source is something you have to assess rather than assume. That is not cynicism; it is a practical skill, and it has become more necessary as the volume of published engineering material has grown far faster than the capacity to review it.

Scope and Corrections

The ten subject areas are deliberately fixed. A reference that expands to cover everything ends up covering nothing well, and the boundary drawn here — electrical engineering through to informatics, with measurement underneath all of it — is a coherent one that maps onto how the discipline is actually taught and practised.

Pages are revised when the underlying standards change or when an explanation turns out to be misleading. Corrections are made in place rather than appended, on the view that a reference page should read as currently correct rather than as a history of its own errors.
